**Why Diani (not Lamu, not Malindi, not Mombasa)**
- **17 km of continuous white sand** — the longest unbroken beach in Kenya
- **Direct flights**: Mara → Diani (Ukunda airstrip) in 90 minutes via Safari Link. No Nairobi stopover needed.
- **Coral reef**: shelters the lagoon, so the water is calm and swimmable year-round
- **Colobus monkey sanctuary**: the only place in Kenya you can see Angolan colobus monkeys in coastal forest
- **Diani is genuinely safe at night** — the beachfront resorts are fenced and patrolled
**The honest limits**
- The reef means no surfing. Surfers should go to Watamu instead.
- During the southeast monsoon (May-September), seaweed accumulates on the southern end. Northern Diani (Galu) is cleaner.
- Diani is built-up. If you want a Robinson Crusoe experience, head to Lamu or Mafia Island (Tanzania).
**What to do beyond the beach**
- **Shimba Hills National Reserve**: 45 minutes inland. The only Kenyan park with sable antelope. Half-day trip.
- **Kaya Kinondo sacred forest**: a UNESCO-listed Mijikenda sacred forest, guided by an elder. 2-hour walk.
- **Diani Beach Art Gallery**: rotating exhibitions of East African artists.
- **Colobus Conservation**: visit the primate rescue centre, half-day.
- **Dhow sunset cruise**: most resorts run a 90-minute sunset dhow trip with drinks.
